Business Broadband and Internet Services

Below, we have summarised key features of the business internet services available. For further advice, to check availability or get a formal quote, contact Everything Voice anytime on 0330 055 3570 or click below:

1. Broadband/FTTC

Company Size: 1-30
Speed Range:   5Mbps to 80Mbps*
Cost:                    Low
Availability:        High

  • Speed to install is a particular advantage.
  • The cost is generally very low.
  • Broadband is widely accessible over just a single copper pair.
  • This is a contended service on the UK’s broadband network so bandwidth and performance cannot be guaranteed.
  • In addition, performance and bandwidth varies massively across the country or even on the same street.

To summarise; in terms of cost and speed to install this is perfect for home users or very small offices where the demands on it are not high. However, because bandwidth, performance and service levels can’t be guaranteed it would be a risky proposition if you need solid, reliable access to cloud services.

2. Wireless leased line

Company Size:   30 – 500
Speed Range:    10Mbps to 10Gbps
Cost:                     Medium
Availability:         Medium

  • Quick to install, sometimes within only a few weeks from point of order.
  • It operates completely independent of the local loop, meaning the existing UK infrastructure is not used, providing protection from major infrastructure or telephone exchange faults.
  • There is almost never an Excess Construction Charge (ECC) which you can sometimes get with carriers installing a leased line.
  • As the service provider has full control over their own infrastructure, the Service Level Guarantees are excellent as is the ability to support hosted applications.

To summarise; in terms of performance, service level guarantees, quickness to install, reliability and cost – this has to be an excellent option. However, it is not widely available.

3. Ethernet delivered on Copper

There are two flavours of this option, depending on where you are in the UK. These are known as Ethernet First Mile and Ethernet GEA:

a) Ethernet First Mile (EFM)

Company Size:   30-100
Speed Range:     2Mbps to 18Mbps
Cost:                     Medium
Availability:         Medium – High

  • Ethernet First Mile is pretty much widely available but you will need to check exactly what speed the service provider can commit to you.
  • It provides consistent, uncontended bandwidth with excellent Service Level Agreements which is suitable for most SMB’s requirements.
  • The cost is competitive and sits at a higher price than Broadband but much lower than Wireless Leased Line or Ethernet Fibre.
  • The performance does degrade over long distances so you’d need to check exactly what bandwidth can be guaranteed as this will depend on your distance from the telephone exchange.

b) Ethernet GEA

Company Size:   30-100
Speed Range:     10Mbps to 20Mbps
Cost: Low             Medium
Availability:          Low – Medium

  • Ethernet GEA is not widely available, with an estimated 40% of UK Businesses being able to gain access.
  • Like EFM it provides consistent, uncontended bandwidth underpinned by excellent Service Level Agreements which are suitable for most SMB’s requirements.
  • The cost is more than Broadband but even less than EFM and much less than Ethernet Fibre.

As with EFM, the performance degrades over long distances so you’d need to check exactly what bandwidth can be guaranteed as this will depend on your distance from the telephone exchange.

4. Ethernet delivered on Fibre

Company Size:     70-500
Speed Range:      10Mbps to 1Gbps
Cost:                       Medium to High
Availability:           High

  • Very widely available.
  • Even if you are some distance from the telephone exchange, bandwidths up to 1Gb can still often be provided.
  • The highest priced option available, where your leased line is delivered end to end on fibre.
  • Much greater bandwidth is available than EFM, Ethernet GEA or Broadband.

To summarise; in terms of its availability and performance, it can be a perfect solution for larger office spaces although the cost is higher than Ethernet GEA, Broadband and EFM.

5. City Fibre

Company Size:    50-500
Speed Range:      500Mbps to 10Gbps
Cost:                      Medium
Availability:          Low to Medium

  • City Fibre has invested in its own network, providing a lower cost alternative to the other Ethernet Fibre options.
  • Cost is lower because the infrastructure is wholly owned by City Fibre and so they don’t need to pay BT Openreach to help provide the service.
  • The advantages to this are the same as other Ethernet options – excellent Service Level Agreements, uncontended.
  • However, City Fibre is not widely available and so you would need to check if you have access.
