What is Ethernet Flex?

Before we answer that question, it’s important to understand what different types of connectivity are available. Considering the 2025 switch-off is getting ever closer, we wouldn’t recommend entertaining legacy ADSL connections at all – they’re not going to work in 4 years’ time. Instead, businesses have the choice of:

FTTC and FTTP

Fibre to the Cabinet and Fibre to the Premises are quickly becoming the two most common connectivity types for small businesses. They’re future-proof, cost-effective and fairly reliable.

However, these Broadband connections are shared with neighbouring homes and businesses, meaning speeds can drop at peak times, and local installations elsewhere can cause unpredictable downtime too.

Plus, you’re limited to the speed you purchase, which is usually unsymmetrical. For example, a 100Mbps connection may seem like a good deal, but your upload speeds may be capped at 20 or 50 Mbps, meaning uploads will take much longer than downloads – not great for remote working!

Leased Lines

Leased Lines are held in high regard especially because they offer symmetrical speeds up to 1Gbps and are usually monitored by the supplier for exceptional reliability. However, they do come at a cost given that they provide you with a direct, private connection to the closest exchange, which usually means digging up roads and fields and laying new cable.

This also means installation takes months rather than days or weeks, and is therefore usually reserved for larger Enterprises, or those that require a private connection to comply with industry best-practice.

Ethernet Flex

Ethernet Flex gives you the best of both worlds – a direct symmetrical connection of 200Mbps up and down is more than enough bandwidth for a typical business’ day-to-day responsibilities.

Though occasionally – whether down to seasonal demand, a hiring spree or working with large files – Ethernet Flex will boost up to 1Gbps symmetrical up and down (5x the normal speed and the same as a Leased Line) when you need it, and at no extra cost!

But that’s not all…

Ethernet Flex connections can also be fully monitored, meaning any unusual traffic, threats or breaches are quickly identified and rectified. Speed is guaranteed to be 200Mps and above, even at busy times. The cost is far closer to an FTTP or FTTC connection than a Leased Line too.
